Sunaulo bihani cha hera, naya gham lagyo ramayera

Manau hai yo Dashain, naya aasha umang bokeyra

Hamro chad aayo, nachney sangai hasney din aayo

Thula ka ashirbad ani maya pauney din aayo

Manau hai yo Dashain, naya aasha umang bokeyra

Rato tika nidhararma, jamara sirai ma, ashirbaad manaima

Sanskriti lai rakhnu parcha hamro dil ma

Sana thula sabai ramaauchan, bhetghat honey cha, ramailo huney cha

Ris irshya rakhnu hunnna, hamro mania ma

Manau hai yo Dashain, naya aasha umang bokeyra

Barsa dinko chadai ma, shanti chayi rahos, sukha maye jeevan hos

Auney saal esai gari, bhetghat bhayi rahos

Sabaiko sapna sakar hos, ashirbad milos, sanskari bani hos

Yehi hamro kamana cha, badaa dashain ko

Manau hai yo Dashain, naya aasha umang bokeyra

My Musical Journey

A singer isn’t born always: the passion, the interest & some inspiration makes them better as he/she grows. Listening to songs of the favorite singers and composers keep you singing anytime, anywhere – this is one of the ways you learn to sing. Some singers can sing better than those who take musical classes. So in music, you must have interest, need to work hard, be innovative to see yourself shining in future.

Born & brought up in a culturally sound family, where my father is a social person who loves to uphold our culture. As an elder son, I always wanted to make my parents and family proud. Since my childhood, I used to sing bhajans (devotional songs) and for this my inspiration are my parents & their friends. I saw them singing bhajans in small groups, sharing their experiences, learning & teaching with inspirational speeches. My mother wanted me to listen to the instruments where the voice of singers and the  sound of instruments matched. When they performed I carefully listened and I found it awesome while the voice of singer synced with the instrument. I started playing the harmonium (A small keyboard instrument that consists of a series of reed pipes, which sound when one of the keys is pressed to open a valve that allows air to pass through) when no one was around as the elders feared that I would damage the instrument. Gradually then they came to know I had interest in those instrument they started nurturing my interest. Within no time, I could play one devotional song and was asked to do stage programs in village level during occasions.  That is how I started performing and singing for audience.

It was then I had to leave my village to continue my studies. I came to Thimphu then, but my passion and carving to learn music didn’t stop me though. I used to stay at my uncle’s place during my school days. My uncle had a small piano which made me explore little more into music. I was in class IV then, I made small group, along with elders, to play deusirey during Diwali festival (Hindu Festival). I got another motivation while in the process, many people liked my singing and they wanted me to grow. I was blessed with advice from the listeners to refrain from taking doma, tobacco, etc, which would adversely affect my voice and talent. I am still thankful them. There were many people who discouraged me but they are my inspiration too. It continued the same until I was enrolled in a College in Punakha. There used to be devotional programs in winter at village and I used to be present there while I was on vacation.

After the completion of my college, I couldn’t join government job due to some issues, while all my mates were absorbed and started making their career. I was in Thimphu to work for my census issue. I had to look for a job as living in Thimphu was expensive and I couldn’t depend much with my relatives. Someone offered me a job for three months that is how is started my career. After three months I work with Hindu Dharma Samudaya of Bhutan (HDSB) where I came to know many people and I was socially active for many activities. I had to be present in meetings for serving tea/snacks to the attendees, but I enjoyed as I could know my people from different walks of life. I was active volunteer at Durga Mandir (Located near Thai Temple, Thimphu) too. The main role I played there was to lead Bhajan in the evening of every program that happened at Mandir. Singing Bhajan & entertaining cabinet ministers at the Mandir was my achievement in life, during auspicious events.  This is how working with HDSB helped me to move forward.

While working at HDSB another biggest opportunity I got was to record song for 106th National Day celebration at Changlimithang. I always wanted to record atleast one song in my life and that wish got fulfilled then. It took me about five hours to record the song but I was really satisfied. Now the dancers are dancing in the song of my voice, I was feeling proud. I also danced with the group that also in the song of my own voice at the Changlimithang ground infront of King, Queen & Royal Family. I felt blessed and still rejoice the memories. I sought feedback from listeners so that I would improve in future if I happen to get such opportunities. It is a duet Lhotsham song dedicated to the country, Kings and our People.

Recording my First Song

The very next year (2014), I was given opportunity to compose and sing for His Majesty the Fourth King during the initiation of 60th Birth Anniversary. This song became the first ever composed song of mine. Not only songs for National Events, I was motivated to compose other songs. With supports from many, I could release debut music video, solo songs, etc. As I was already started composing and singing my own songs, I got better opportunity to compose song for 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo in 2015. The celebration was historic one coincided with Diwali. I recorded 3 songs during The Event along with my friends and even performed LIVE in presence of Prime Minister and cabinet.

"Music made me forget my sorrows of life. "

I could even gift a song to my sister on her wedding which is now liked by her son (my Nephew). Another musical achievement was releasing Bhajan album “Bhakti Sudha” along with my mates in 2016.
Bhajan Album, "Bhakti Sudha"

Other satisfactory achievement of singing career is raising fund for people with disabilities and to help victim of earthquake in Nepal.
Musical Social Work

I was still working for songs for National Events and it was in 2016 I wanted to try something new. I went to make song in a prominent studio who have been supporting youth. It’s M-Studio. I wanted to give new flavor to my song by recording in the studio which arranges music for Dzongkha songs. The music Director accepted my proposal and started working for the music for my song. I wanted to fuse the song with Lhotsham and dzongkhag musical elements and it worked. It was really very satisfying and gave new flavor to my song. I recorded another song there few months later. Likewise I recorded another song with Karma Studio who works for Bhutanese Films, the fusion sounded really unique but soothing.

Amalgamating Lhotsham song with Dzongkha music elements and giving birth to new product is my "Life Time Achievement" which I came to know when Youth Caring Community (https://www.facebook.com/YCCBhutan) awarded me with the title “Young Creative Leader, 2019”  on International Youth Day (12th Aug, 2019)
